Default Cutting hole tips for flush mounting

I know I only got once chance to do this right so any tips would be appreciated. For flush mounting electronics, what is the best way to cut the opening? Drill a hole in each corner, use a power jig saw, sabre saw, hand saw, etc.?

I use a Fein Sander as they cut very straight and clean. You can use a jig saw just make sure you tape up the dash as it can scratch it up quick. You can also use a rotozip if the dash is not too thick.

You also want to use blue painters tape to keep the edges from splintering. Here is a link to an install

Barrett, those Fien Sanders are nice! We use them on our Cotuit Skiff's (little racing sailboats that have as much wood as a piano) for sanding them down before we varnish. How would it apply to cutting a hole in a dash though? Is there an attachment or something? Also, where do you get your spare parts for them?

Jim,They make a blade that attaches. It is round but I snap it so I have a straight edge. I get the blades locally but I bought the unit online. There is only one place in town that has it hear and they want 300 for it.

Just posted this in another thread. I used to use a Roto-Zip, now I use one of these.

Much cleaner cut, much less mess too.

That works very well. For me though, when I am not at the shop its hard for me to get air at the marina and such.

Use a Drimel tool with the fiberglass cutter. I installed all my electronuics myself with the thing and it will cut your boat in half if you wanted to. You have cutters and sanders all in one tool so you can get the fit very tight.

There are actually a bunch of diffrent blade's for them. Diffrent sizes and shapes. Here's a whole list of them.

There is a new blade style change comming into effect on the mounting point.

This is the blade I'd think you want for fiberglass.

Jamestown Dist, has alway's had high prices. You can get them cheaper elsewhere.

You da man! That blade comes in the kit when you order the unit. I never did like that blade too much though.

These are the ones I use. They are easy to snap if you need to get in a tight spot or precision cutting.

Damn. $60 for that blade. Do they last longer than sabre saw blades when cutting fiberglass?

They last pretty long. I usually get a good bit of jobs out of them. With a new blade it cuts through a dash like butter.

They will cut starboard, but you have to adjust the settings way down as it will melt it and it will seal back. I would rather use a saw for starboard.

Ok. Makes sense. One last question....would you recommend the variable speed model and what speed for fiberglass?
