Default Garmin 178C questions

I just ordered a Garmin 178c gpc/fishfinder. I can plug in a bluechart chip for my area for about $129. I am wondering what is better though..buy a premade chip for my area, or buy a blank one and the bluechart s/w and USB reader?

Also..if I get a premade bluechart chip..how do get info BACK to my PC..or can I? Can I save waypoints, etc to the chip?

And if I get a blank chip instead..what size in MB do I REALLY need?

I purchased the Marine Data Management Kit from Garmin with a 16MB blank card. It's really nice to enter waypoints and routes at the PC and then plug the card into the 178C at the boat. By far the best way to go IMO.

Also I forgot to add that,

16MB has been plenty for the online updates, Bluechart Americas V7 and U.S. Lakes maps. THe best price was actually online at Garmin's website, although I can't seem to find the product listing there today. It was about $60 and well worth it.

Is 16MB enough do you think? Have you run it out of memory?

I saw the "kit" after I posted, and agree thats the way to go.

I've transferred my Bluechart Americas V7 maps without a problem and that's enough for me (16MB card). I keep the different files and waypoints on the PC and then transfer what I need when I need it. Works great for me but I'm no expert at this stuff. I'm sure others on here can tell you more.

That sounds about what I will be doing with it as well. Thanks for the info!

16 meg is more than plenty
and i agree that the cd/blank chip is the way to go...much more flexible and if you "accidently" erase the chip (don't ask) all you have to do is load it back up again
