Default Garmin 162 Screen

This is not a bash post, I just hope this will keep someone from making the same mistake I made.

Garmin GPSMAP 162i, I have had mine for three years now. It has been flawless.

Last Thursday, we went to mom's house in Beaufort. I left the electronics on the boat in her backyard. My rig is normally kept in a garage. It rained pretty hard that night and I did not have the covers installed on my 162 nor my 240 Blue.

Friday, we went out fishing. I notice the unit got all fogged up after about 20 minutes. I could tell it had water in it. The 240 Blue was fine.

Anyway, I kept running it hoping it would dry out. Friday afternoon, I took the electronics off at the dock at put them in my dry bag.

When I installed the unit Saturday morning, it was WORSE. I could hardly see the screen and it had the 4 inch rectangle that someone else spoke of. As the day progressed, I started to see vertical lines on the screen which were represented by non-lit pixels.

Sunday night, I took the unit apart and it had visible water in it. I used alcohol to remove the water and used LCD wipes to clean the LCD screen and the protective shield. The water is gone now, but the unit has dark spots on it and the vertical lines.

So anyway, I guess I screwed up and now it will have to be sent back. The 162 and the 240 Blue share the same cosmetic appearance and it looks like the same screen/casing. Obviously, the 162 is not sealed as good as the 240 Blue. Live and learn.

I am considering buying a new unit in lieu of the repair cost which is unknown at this time. I really like my 162 and hope the repair cost is minimal.

Live and learn.

hotspot they will charge you $150 to fix the 162, if they decide it is fixable
i sold my 162i in april for $220, but it was pristine

even so no way would i have spent another $150 on it to fix it knowing it was discontinued (and remembering how much i paid for it) and out of warranty. BTW...you will not believe how much nicer and faster the new ones are...i got a color 182i for a great price and it was more than worth it

Thanks for the advice cgrand. I have not heard from them yet, so I am not sure what I will do. I really like the unit, but to drop $150 in it does not make sense. It still works fine, just has those dang lines.

I submitted a request on Monday and have not heard back yet, guess they are swamped.

I put some rice inside the unit and put it back together. All the dark spots are gone now and some of the lines are gone, it may be fixing itself, hope so.

Keep us informed. Usually when you have missing bars the lcd is going to hit the fan. Did you spray any electronics cleaner to get rid of the moisture on the boards so nothing will get coroded? Let us know the outcome and goodluck!

Yes sir, I did. The unit looks good and clean on the inside. Their site says an out of warranty repair for this model is $100, so I may just buy another unit on eBay and keep this one as a spare. I am pretty sure I can pick one up for $200.

I really like the unit, so I decide to get it fixed.

I am shipping the unit out today for the reburb which is $100.

I am also going to keep an eye on eBay for a spare unit.

Just in case you guys do not find a good price. I personally got Boat US to match some-other-website.com's price on the 198C. I bought it with the Transducer for $950.. their regular price on the unit was $1149 for the unit and $50 for the transducer. Just trying to help... They also said if anything came about with my 198C due to the 25 watt radios being keyed near the unit (shutting down the sonar) that they would replace it as soon as Garmin cures the problem.. PS they will have to call the District Manager to get approval for the price match. Just don't tell em I told you about it... Thanks

There are several THT Vendors here that have even BETTER pricing than the sites you mentioned.

Check out the Vendor Forums.

Default Re: Garmin 162 Screen **UPDATE**

I shipped the unit back last Wednesday the 10th, they received it Friday the 12th, I had a new unit at my house when I got home yesterday, Tuesday the 15th.

Seems to be fine, they sent me new unlock codes for all my maps. They also copied all of my user loaded data from the old unit to the new unit. Now I just have to remember how I had the old one setup!!

I still don't think water should have ever gotten in the old unit to start with.

I am very pleased with their response time. From the time I talked to someone, it only took 5 working days to get my issues resolved. Great service!
