Default Raymarine Fishinder Shuts itself down?

Hi guys, I have a weird problem with my new Raymarine Fishfinder. I just installed it and when I turn it on at the dock, it works great. When i use it and stay under a certain rpm it works great. When I get to about 1800rpm, it will power cycle itself on and off until I unplug the power from it. Now my old Raymarine (Apelco) Fishfinder was getting power from a bus under the dash that is shared with other things, I'm just not sure what as I haven't had the time to trace it out. I don't think the old one has the draw that the new one does. The manual says that Raymarine recommends running seperate power for the unit, but I thought maybe I could cheat and use the same power source as the old one since it's a short run and I didn't need to buy and extra wires. I plan on running new wires tonight back to the battery but wanted to get some of your thoughts. Could it be that once I throttle up a bit, that the unit isn't getting the juice it needs? Thanks guys!

You said all of that imfo, but you left out a bunch. "Important Stuff"

What is the battery voltage at the battery with the motor running above 2000RPM?

Cneck this with a VOM meter. The reading will tell you what's going on. It should be 14.2 Volt's aprox.

Higher and the electronic's will shut down and below 10.5 volt's aprox and they will shut down too.

How do you like the Raymarine (Apelco) Fishfinder? I bought a 365L year's ago. What a POS. Raymarine will NEVER get another dollar of my money. Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, it's not going to happen.

Warthog, from what I can tell Battery voltage is approx 13.6. My Old Apelco L365 I had for about 6 years. It was not that great as a fishfinder but I liked the price and the other functions like speed, water temp, depth. The new one is the ds400. I got it for a good price online but now I am thinking it wasn't as good a buy as I thought. By the way, I ran dedicated pos, neg lines for it (14GA, 12'run) and it still power cycles. I didn't have a voltmeter tonight but I had a continuity tester that i had connected to the pos pin on the harness. went for a ride and it stayed lit, no dimming, no outage. I know it's no replacement for a voltmeter but it's what I had to work with.

Mine shuts down too! The time for it to do so is whenever I start my 03 Honda BF115. Then it goes down, and a second later restarts itself back up. I figured that it was a voltage issue. Funny thing is, even if I isolate the bat switch to another bat, it still does the same thing. ;?

I to have the same problem with my dsm 300. When I start the engine after sitting for a time the dsm shutdown and restarts. If I run two batteries, this does not happen. If the volts drop below 10 (they will when starting on one battery) the dsm unit gets an electronic handshake that tells it to shut down. Run an additional battery and your problem will hopefully be solved.

Mine is fine when i leave it on and start the motor, it's fine until i start to throttle up then will continuously power cycle until i throttle back and then it resumes functioining. weird. i ran the pos and ned direct to the battery and ran the ground to the neg line. i'm stumped.

This is just a guess, but it sounds to me like there is some ripple in the power that may not show up on a VOM but the small fluctuation is causing the problem. The old unit may not have been as touchy. And here's something else to consider. A friend of mine had your problem with one exception. His would cycle whenever he keyed the mike on the VHF radio. Even totally running on an isolated battery, the unit would cycle. Obviously some sort of RFI problem, but nearly impossible to trace.

I called Raymarine Tech Support, what a joke. All the Tech could tell me was "Buy a second battery, you cannot run this unit off the same battery as the motor..". I told him that nowhere in the manual does it say a second battery and switch need to be installed and if that were the case I would never have purchased it. I have an 18' boat with no room for a second battery. Is this really the only solution? It sounded like the guy was busy and didn't want to spend any time with me or my problem. He told me to get a second battery, run a lin eto the unit and try it then. So i'm supposed to buy a second battery and switch just to experiment with?

I run a DS 500 from the battery attached to the motor without issue. Never had any power related problems ....... Dealt with tech support x2 both times they were right on the money ... even backed it up with e-mails. Sorry

Thanks bluewaterpirate, I figured I was probably getting the run around. I am disappointed in the tech support I got, I tried again today using their website. It says 3 days for a response. I also contacted the supplier I bought it from, his response was "Raymarine techs would know what their units need to run properly, that's all I can say..."
