Default Lowrance Elite 7 HDI - Base mapping???

My bro-in-law is looking at the elite 7 for a skiff install. He was leaning towards the Navionics Gold version but we were up at BPS and they had it running w/out any chip in it and it looked like the Insight which I have on my HDS units. IMHO the insight has better inshore and Chessy coverage (contours etc) but what we are confused about is what version of the unit to buy to get the "insight" looking mapping.

So I guess the question is...does anyone have the elite w/just the base mapping? If so what kind of detail are you seeing?

FWIW I have the Nav Gold in my Dragonfly and it suxs compared to the Insight, Nav Fish N Chip and the C-Map Max bathymetrics I have in other machines. Only issue I have w/the Insight is the lack of coverage 10+ off which is why I have the Fish N Chip and C-Map.

The base insight might be ok on costal waters, but inland it is awful.
Bought the Lake Insight Pro 2013 chip after 1 day of running it.

Yes...sorry... I should have noted I'm interested in the inshore east coast (DELMARVA) and Chesapeake specifically.

When the units are is Simulator or Demo mode (which they generally are at BPS) you can't tell much because what you are seeing is 'pre-loaded' into the simulator and demo files. Have the BPS team member take the unit off of simulator, then find your lake and zoom in. Then simply insert your card and select Navionics on the menu and compare. The BPS should have the Insight Pro chip from Lowrance to compare, but I'm not sure if they have a Navionics card to demo.

I would rec. the Nav + you can get off shore detail as well as inland lakes all on one one chip, you select the areas you want and load it to the chip. Plus you get Freshest Data for a year. http://www.navionics.com/en/navionics-plus

Unit was not in demo mode and we don't fish lakes. I was able to cursor to Chesapeake and near shore off DelMarVa and see the detail with the preloaded Insight mapping. There was no chip in the machine.

The Elite HDI units ship either with a base map (shoreline) or a Gold version. Do you remember the $ of the unit you played with?

I have heard the gold card that comes with it sucks, not the same as the gold chip you purchase separately. Navionics plus is what I bought for mine, sonar charts are in 1 foot increments with good tide and current info. I fish which makes this perfect for me. You can sample Navionics Plus for your area on their web site. On the lower left corner of the chart is a "sonar Chart" icon. Click it and see the chart go from normal depth increments to 1 foot increments. Pretty cool.

I should clear one other thing up for the OP. The difference between SIMULATOR and DEMO. In simulator mode the unit is showing preloaded simulated files (actual recordings and soundings). In demo mode the unit shows you a 'slide show' like presentation. I find, at Bass Pro, that the internal GPS module will not receive through the metal ceiling and all the lights, and I doubt that the store installed an external antenna on the roof of the building, but I guess it is possible. What I do for customers is place the unit on a full chart page then take it off of simulator/demo. If you leave a sonar page up, some of the Elites will automatically re-enter simulator if there is no transducer connected.

Just sayin.....

Looks like Lowrance is offering rebates or free chips, depending on models. With the Elite HDI they offer the Nautic Insight Prov14 or the Insight Genesis with 1 year subscription. What is the difference (beyond needing a subscription) with the 2 Insights?
Also, which transducer works best with the Elites, the Lowrance or the Airmar?

Insight Genesis is so you can create your own maps for whatever area you like. YOU record the sonar for your area, upload it to Lowrances Genesis site. Lowrance will generate your map and send you a link via email to view your map. If you like your map then you can purchase it for a small fee.
The subscription rates vary depending on your needs. This is really great for areas not charted by Lowrance or Navionics!

The Insight Planner is computer based software so you can plan trips, routes, stopping places, add waypoints, etc...etc...etc.. right from your PC.

If you use an Airmar transducer you will lose the DownScan Imaging unless you install an additional capable transducer.

edit: I just became aware of another rebate for the Elite-7HDI; Free Lake Insight PRO, Naughtic Insight PRO, or Insight Genesis.
and for the Elite-5HDI is Lake Insight PRO map card and a sun cover. This is at Bass Pro Shops only.

I just went online and Lowrance is offering rebates, I didn't see where it was only from Bass Pro Shops. I don't know about the sun cover though, it may only be thru BPS

The BPS only was for the Elite-5 HDI rebate. Sorry for not being clear.
