Default Garmin 376C GPS & XM Weather

I was thinking that a portable GPS for a backup would be a good idea & saw this unit on their website. It has rechargable batteries & a built-in antenna making it independent of onboard systems. It also has the capability to receive the XM weather broadcasts on a subscription basis. According to the website, its due out next month. Here's the link: http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap376c/

I like! I have been wanting the ability to get the XM Weather and just couldn't justify the cost of the 3000 series displays, plus the additional XM receiver. I also cannot spare the console space for the previous solutions. I already have a color chartplotter with a bunch of money tied up in chart chips (C-MAP NT+) and do not want to replace this main unit.

I have been using my LCX-15MT as a backup plotter (with NMEA feed from handheld) and it can now go back to just duty as a sounder. Any of you electronics sales types got a pre-release, once-in-a-lifetime, cheaper-than-dirt deal? Send me a PM.

Similar to the GPSMAP 276C, the GPSMAP 376C is both a color chartplotter and automobile navigator. It features a built-in basemap and auto routing to help you navigate the open waters or open road. With an optional automotive kit that includes MapSource City Select® software, you can select a destination on land and receive turn-by-turn directions to addresses and points of interest throughout the United States and Canada.

The big difference is that the 376C is capable of receiving the XM weather broadcasts. John - if it's used on the boat & in the car, do you swap memory chips for cartography ?

You can enhance the basemap detail on the GPSMAP 376C by downloading data from optional MapSource DVDs or CDs to an optional Garmin data card, or by plugging in data cards preprogrammed with BlueChart® or Fishing Hot Spots® detail.

So to use it in the car, you insert a data chip with MapSource downloaded data. To use it on the boat you insert a BlueChart chip. I'm interested in one when they become available.

If your gonna use it for both car and boad and want to use the same chip you can, HOWEVER. Get the largest chip you can. The Streets and MAPS from Garmin takes up waayy more room than Blue charts do.. I asked XM if there would be a price break if you had XM Weather on a FIXED mount on your boat and added the 376C for backup or vehical use only.. Yes.. pricing will be released real soon.

Being new to GPS, do I understand that you can get both marine Blue Chart and land Streets maps on a DVDs and take it from my computer to a memory chip or download direct? Also, does this allow for setting up of way points on the computer and when downloaded to the Garmin the way points are listed?All-in-all this looks like the best system for my small consoled boat.David

dcpaint, YES. The blue charts & streets and maps allow you to manage your way points and plan trips right on your PC. You can save tracks and routes from your Garmin and overlay them on your screen. By the way, the GARMIN 376C will be avialable in mid August..
