Default Please Help - - Garmin 198c Problems.

I know there were a few guys that had problems with their VHF causing problems with their Garmin 198c. Would love to know how you solved the problem.

Nothing Garmin is telling me is working. I'm about to return the unit but I really like it.

Thank You,
Bill

Every time I key up my VHF the sonar screen on the Garmin goes blank and reads "Sonar Disconnected". I have to power cycle the Garmin to get the sonar to work again.

Per Garmin I have tried the following:

Connected GPS to saperate power source.
Move Garmin unit further away from the VHF and antenna. (Moned it to the other end of the boat to test)
Seperate the wiring so none of the wires are run nex to each other.

I can't believe Garmin doesn't think these units will be installed next to a VHF radio. There is only so much room on my center console to mount this stuff.

I'm about 1 day away from returning the Garmin and installing a Lowrance!!

Tightlines: Can you give me a good price

Thanks,
Bill

I have spoken to two different installers about this and we are all in conclusion that the 198c's transformer
in the unit is being knocked out by the high frequency power of the VHF ...I would contact the place you purchased it from and get them to exchange it for another unit as the one you have is defective!...

keep me posted...

Bill, Try turning off you VHF, turn on your GARMIN. Tug on your transducer cable and see if you get the same transducer disconnected response. IF you replace your unit and the problem continues, place a 1 FARAD capicitor in parallel on the power line. This will short your transiants to ground. IF you have an installer in your area with an O'Scope have him look at your DC voltage. If you need more power help please email me..

Mike,

Garmin first thought it was a power problem and had me connect my VHF to a totally different power source. My dealer took another battey and sat it on the back of the boat, connected the VHF to it, and it still caused the sonar to disconnect. They even took a handheld VHF and keyed it up while on the boat and it caused the same problem.

I picked up another Garmin unit last night and will be swapping it out after work today. I'll kep you posted.

Thank You for your help!!

My guess is that garmin is having problems with shielding on this unit.
I days past, manufacturers used a grounded metal cage for shielding.
These days, a coating is applied to the inside of the plastic case. If this
coating is faulty there can be discontinuities and the shielding will lose
its effectiveness. Problems often occur around connectors. You can
get some shielding material and wrap the unit and see if you still have
the problem. Not sure where to get it but aluminum foil will not do the
job.

Guys, I have been dealing with this problem for two weeks now. I have posted on a few other fourms and there are others that are having the same problem.

My dealer did the initial install of the 198c so I took it back to them to see if they could fix the problem. They worked on it for three days (even talked to Garmin) and they can't solve the "Sonar Disconnected" problem. I got my boat back and decided to try a few things my self and no luck. I even exchanged the unit at West Marine.

The new unit did not fix the problem.

I sopke with the Garmin rep at my local West Marine store and he wanted to try and solve the problem. So I took my boat to the store and we spent 2 hours trying diferent units, diferent transducers, different VHF radios, handheld vhf radios, double and triple checked the wiring, nothing solved the problem.

We finally tried another model (178c) and it worked properly.

As of now it looks like there is a defect in the Garmin 198c model.

Garmin will not admit to a problem yet but there going to have to do something soon.

I will be calling Garmin tomorrow as well as the local rep. to try and get to the bottom of this.

You say a hand held VHF toasts the 198? Forget voltage drop.

You have a number of options go with an earlier Garmin Combo Unit, stay with the 198c keep trouble shooting & hope Garmin finds a solution, move up to their new 3005 model, or go with another manufacturer. I think u've done all that can be done the ball is in Garmins court. They're sure getting a lot of bad press at this juncture. Good luck!
