Default Best Raymarine Autopilot for 2005 3070 Pursuit?

Looking for some advise/opinions/experiences on selecting the best Raymarine autopilot products/combination for a new 3070 with twin F250's. I want the best combination that gives me flawless low speed boat control while trolling from 1.5 to 3.5 MPH. It has to perform perfectly and be reliable. Plan on rigging with other Raymarine products like the E120, etc.

Control Head - Probably going with ST8001 (Don't know if there are any newer?)
Hydraulic Drive Selection - ?
Core Pack Selection - ? S1 or S1G or S2 or S2G
Back-up Wireless Remotes - ?

Thanks in advance!

Dave S.

With all the requirments you've listed why not go with a better autopilot???
the TR-1 from http://www.nautamatic.com/

a much better pilot than Ray ... but if it's Ray or no way the St8001 S2G is your better choice!!!
with the wireless remote SmartController Wireless SeaTalk autopilot and instrument remote control unit.

S2G Corepack

* 12 volt Course Computer designed for Type 1 Drive units
* 15 Amp (20 Amp peak) motor drive output
* Recommended for mechanically steered vessels under 24,000 lbs (11,000 Kg)
* Recommended for hydraulically steered vessels with cylinder ram sized 4.9in3to 14in3(80cc – 230cc)
* Built in Rate Gyro
* Raymarine AST (Advanced Steering Technology) with AutoLearn
* Gyro Stablized heading output for MARPA and radar/chart overlay on Raymarine Radars

Behind the autopilot control head is the intelligence hub of the system, the Corepack. Consisting of an advanced course computer, fluxgate compass and rudder feedback, the Corepack is an integral part of the autopilot system.

Corepack components explained

Course Computer
The course computer is the intelligence behind your autopilot system. It includes a powerful microprocessor, programmed with all the steering know-how we've gained over many years and hundreds of thousands of boats. The course computer performs the main course keeping function and also houses the electronic control circuitry for the drive unit and power amplifier. NMEA inputs and outputs enable it to operate easily with equipment from other manufacturers. A SeaTalk interface provides connection to the control head and communication with other Raymarine devices.

Fluxgate Compass
The fluxgate compass module houses a state-of-the-art electronic compass mechanism, capable of tracking your boat's heading with incredible accuracy. The mechanism is gimballed, enabling it to handle pitch and roll movements up to +/-35o. The fluxgate compass connects directly to the course computer. It mounts on a bulkhead below decks on most boats; if yours is a steel-decked boat, the compass will be mounted above decks, out of the reach of magnetic interference.

Rudder Reference Transducer
This transducer performs a vital role too: it tells the course computer the precise position of your boat's rudder at all times. the rotary model is most commonly required; the linear model is used for hydraulic outboard steering systems. The rotary model is mounted adjacent to the rudder stock, while the optional linear model is mounted on the bullhorn ram of outboard engines.

John's recommendation sounds right on target The boat is about 11K lbs. with fuel. John - Wouldn't the S1G provide enough capacity ? Dave - I like your taste in boats.

I just installed a S1G for my Stamas 320 (twin Suzuki 250 hp). I called Raymarine Tech; they recommended the S1G over the S2G. I tested it with a 400 mile round trip to the tuna grounds; and autopilot never missed a beat. It also worked great at trolling speeds. This weekend I plan on interfacing it with my C120.

Get the S1G if you go raymarine. The G models gives better steering control as it watches the rate of change as well as general direction. That gives it better real time response to wave action.

I just added the S100 remote to my S1G. It's a plug and play control, and lets you steer and engage/disengage the AP from anywhere on the boat.

I too have a 3070 (Offshore). The recommedations for the Raymarine S1G pack are correct.
I decided on the TRI Gladiator. Decision driven by feedback attesting to its superior performance (yes, a little pricey) and it does not require a rudder feedback device. The clincher for me. The Raymarine (linear or rotory) rudder feedbacks are with their problems. Frequent failure rate. Also, it is more stuff to mount onto the OB's or rudder and to maintain. My $.02.

Ya'll are right on target. One of the main problems I am having with the Raymarine rudder feedback is the bracket on the motor. Rust!!!!It operates great just rust on a new boat gets me sick.

Bz - Do you feel that the TR1's performance has been worth the extra investment ?

I closed my eyes for the extra $$$. Have not looked to re-think my decision. Heard to much negative feedback about the Raymarine rudder feedback systems (rust, problematic, more maintenance). Those who made the leap to the TR1 had no complaints. By the book, the TR1 is supposed to do more than the Raymaine unit. Don't have many hours to offer more detail. The TR1 comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. I believe that if the unit does not do what it claims to do, you can get you $$$ back. Check out the fine print on this. Look closely at a side by side compare of the two units features. Good luck with your decision.

none of the raymarine rudder feedback units rust.

The linear one (the stick) is all stainless steel and aluminum. The rotary one for use with outboards is encased in epoxy.

The feedback is not rusting, the bracket that mounts to the outboard is rusting.

I have a ST8001 w/ a S1G on my 29'. Had a couple of problems right at first, not with the rudder reference, but with the control head. Raymarine helped solve the problem. Love it now.

Sorry, I missed the bracket part. I actually had to fabricate my own bracket. Surprising that they dont care much about the installation. I guess they assume everyone should be taking it to a shop.
