Default Weak VHF Transmission

I recently replaced an antenna on my boat with a similar antenna in the same llocation. I receive quite well from varied distances. I transmit loud and clear at fairly short range
( less than 1/2 mile); however from further distances, my transmission doesn't seem to work.
Could the problem be a bad PL 259 connector at the back of the radio? I do have the setting on high power.

I had the same problem last time I replaced my antenna. it ended up being the PL-259 connector. I would go at it with a multi-meter and make sure there is no short in the connector.

Some radios revert to low power if they detect a problem with the antenna connection. This sounds like your problem. It will still show High power, but transmits at Low for protection.
