Default Icom 402S

OK, just not me having a rec. and transmit problem. Fished a different boat last weekend. Radio wouldn't rec. over 3 miles and transmit was almost non-existent. Considering all the problem posts with the 402S, this can't be an installation problem. Add another to the list with problems with the ICOM 402S. This has turned into a marine safety issue, and ICOM needs to step up to the issue.. Evidently ICOM hasn't admitted to a problem. Is it time to advise the USCG to issue a safety recall?

I wasglad to see your post. I have had nothing but trouble with my 402s. Is there a problem with the 502 also. I have reworked connections, programmes etc., all to no avail. What is the choice of the board for VHF?

If the radio isn't receiving well, the problem is most likely the antenna.

Thought I had the problem solved with my 402s, after the 2nd Antenna, I had a pro install a new antenna and check out the Radio seemed ok till today (10 days later), I was 200 feet in front of an Inter coastal bridge and the Bridge tender could not hear me and I received the worst garble from him.

May be it's time to inform Boat US & the Coast Guard as the radio has a problem that could be dangerous in case of a May Day etc.

my 302 works flawlessly.. Not as filled with features, but it works every time.. The main reason for the radio is safety and reliability ?? Fancy may not cut it.. just a simple mans opinion.

Mine has worked fine for two and a half seasons.

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer to get your problem solved? There's a good chance they will repair or replace the radio under warranty. Other possibilities include antenna problems or power or ground problems on your boat. Or the radio is getting wet.

The radio has a 3 year warranty fellas. If it is a definite problem you can send it back or bring it to a warranty dealer.

The installer, find out if he has a Bird meter. With that he can check out the transmit and receive of the radio and it will tell what is wrong. Or hit Boater's World or West and get an inline SWR meter. I would call the installer back and see what he finds. IF that PL259 connector is shorted you will get what is happening right now.

Let us know what happens.
