Look at the Icom 302's 402's 422, and the 502's !!!

Stay with digital antennas

Concur with the Icom and Digital comments above.

Go "cheapest possible price" on your beer (if necessary). Buy quality equipment when your life may depend on it.

Standard Horizon or Icom for the VHF. Shop around...do a google search....check with your friendly THT vendors...

Digital Antenna for the antenna. Once, I thought the whole Digital v. Shakespeare thing wasn't a big deal...then I switched...6 weather stations come in vs. 1; marina 25 miles away can hear me loud and clear....I was sold at that point.

Maybe you were using a "cheap" Shakespeare model? No flame intended ... just asking, as you can spend $20 or > $100 for one by that manufacturer. Not a fair comparison to just drop brand names IMHO.

FWIW I use the Shakespeare Galaxy 5225 and have no reason to ever consider and buy another antenna or another brand ... unless I forget to take it down while going under a bridge that is .

It is not just the model !

I, myself ,noticed marked improvement when I replaced a fairly new Shakespeare with a Digital. Same thing with 7 others I know of. All 8 antennae were "top end" 5225 FLT or XT Galaxies.

There are a multitude of similar experiences that have been posted here.

The last boat had a 5225...when I switched to the 529 I noticed a huge difference.

This boat had a 5206-C, and the cable had been shortened so there was no surprise that everything dramatically improved when I switched the antenna.

Go w/Digital. The high end shakepeare is a good antenna but the digital is just awesome.

I didnt know anything about the digital antenna. I just bought a Shakesphere 5102 and put it on this week. If it makes that much difference I wish I had known. I have an ICOM VHF.
