Default Help! Garmin GPSMAP 162

i recently purchased a boat that came with the GPS 162 unit. the guy that sold me the boat stated that the unit would not receive satalite signal, but it was right out of the box.
i looked at the bnc connector and it appeared to not be connected to the coax very well. so i installed a new bnc connector.
i still can not get a signal.
any thoughts or suggestions for what to try next?

thanks
cliff

Does it have power?
Is the antenna blocked?

Just my thoughts.

I have an older gpsmap 168 and it has been great for 4 years.

Cliff,I have a Garmin GPSMap 230. I was about 13 miles offshore May 28, and suddenly lost all satellites. The problem turned out to be a defective antenna.

The way I proved it was to remove the antenna from my handheld GPS-48, and plug it on the back of the GPSMap 230. Viola... it worked!

Do you happen to have a GPS antenna on another unit, or possibly from a friend, that you can temporarily swap?

Also, West Marine (and others) normally carry Garmin antennas. Perhaps one of your local stores would let you take one out in the parking lot long enough to see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't, the only alternative I can suggest is to call Garmin to get an RMER number, then ship it to them for repair.
