Default Navionics+ chip/older lowrance

Santa brought me some gift cards and I am looking to purchase a Navionics plus chip for my Lowrance 525c df. The Navionics site says my unit is compatible with the chip, however, I am concerned about spending $180 on it and having it not work since my gps is older. Does anyone have experience with this unit and chip? If I upgrade my unit in the future could the chip be used on the new unit as well?

You should be able to find one used here in the classifieds or on ebay for $60-75. If visa/amex gift cards you could paypal money with a small fee.

Otherwise you'll need an SD (sometimes called MMC) format chip. You should probably update the firmware in your lowrance unit at the same time if you havent' done this recently. New software often means more data displayed from the Navionics chip and slightly faster redraw rate when zooming in/out.

As for using the chip on a new unit it the future.... Not really applicable. The new units will have the equivalent of Navionics Gold chart data built in for the entire united states.

If you are considering upgrading the unit in the future, it would probably be a good time to look at the big picture now. You can get an HDS5 Gen2 which is the newest version of your 5" display for $650 new and complete. A used Gen1 would be an excellent option as well and could be bought for around $400 used. If you go this route, make sure you purchase one with INSIGHT maps built in. This will mean you wont need charts.

You should be able to sell your Lowrance 525C for at lease $100-200 depending on the accessories you include.
