Default Garmin GMR xHD Radar (worth the wait?)

Boat should be finished by the beginning of January (25' competition). With all the new releases by Garmin my plans for electronics are already outdated. I was originally set on the GMR 24 HD. The release of the new xHD 18 and 24 have me reconsidering. It appears the 18 xHD has bumped up to a 48nm range and has more options while being less expensive than the original 24. If you were in my position would you wait on the new product or stick with the original 24. If you were going with the new xHD systems is the 24 that much better than the 18 given it appears they have the same options and range? Only difference I can see between the two is horizontal beam width. (will be connected to a pair of either 741xs or new 1040/840xs)

Thanks for any and all help impossible for me to keep up with all the new marine technology,
Brad

My understanding is that the new HDx will be mostly a soft ware improvement, which will give better discrimination. The lesser horizontal beam width of the 24 will still win over the 18. 24 vs 36 vs 48 miles does not mean a thing in the real world. You are going to be limited by the height of both your radar unit vs the height of the object you are looking at. The "horizon" will only be 10 or so miles with a boat which is equal height. Land masses which are hundreds of feet in height will be seen at great distances--but this rarely is important. The difference in discrimination, may be...or may not be. I have a 24 HD and will stick with it.

I also have a 24HD paired with a 6212 that I just installed about 8 months ago and am very happy with its performance and have no intentions of replacing it. I don't quite know what the difference will be between the two or how much better it will perform in real world conditions.

What display are you pairing it up with and which sounder are you going with ? Also congrats on the Competition, it's a great boat.

From what I gathered, the new version will offer color returns. That alone makes me want it. I have the 24hd now, great unit. But it's all a single color on the screen and particularly when looking at weather I'd MUCH rather see it like most of us are used to when we look at radar from NOAA or the news or whatever... Red returns for the real heavy crap, yellow for the kinda heavy, green for the lighter rain, etc.

If I were you, I'd wait and get the new version.

I love my 24HD. Absolutely think it is great. That being said, If I were you, I would probably wait.

Unless the 24HD suddenly has a massive price drop - then I would consider it on "value" alone.

I run in the dark a lot and I use the radar all the time.

I am waiting for it. I saw it in action via a sneak peek.

I think I'm going to be waiting for it as well based on the software "upgrades" alone.

Don't think it has been released yet. Haven't even seen a screen shot on the garmin site. Just pics of the unit itself.

So it sounds like I'll have a 24HD for sale in February if anyone is interested.

I was visiting with a friend who has had the 12 KW 6 foot array Garmin xHD on his boat for about 7 months. He feels that the xHD is substantially better than the HD he had on previously. Since this is a software upgrade, the same experience should apply to the 24" dome unit.

Thanks for all of the help and responses, I apologize for the delay my laptop crashed over the holidays just picked up a new one. I will be running two 741xs with the Airmar B-175m ducer. Given the smaller unit I realize I may not get everything out of the new software upgrades but I am thinking with the minute price difference when purchasing new might be better off waiting as many of you have recommended.
