Default Simrad electronics quality

How does Simrad quality compare to others.

I am considering the CX 44 with radar, chartplotter and fishfinder. Does it stack up to Furuno quality?

Thanks for any replies

Simrad quality is top of the list. It is right up with Furuno for reliability and "bullet proofness".

Check out this 9-part video that explains every aspect of the new Simrad CX navstation. I gotta say, this is one awsome unit. Check it out. All together its a long video, but its very educational. At first, I thought the unit was not very user-friendly, but after watching this video, I have a better understanding. I wish I had one myself.

No. Furuno’s objective is to be up there with Simrad.

Simrad is the apex of consumer marine electronics. It is quality, all the way. Here’s what an independent 3rd party, Powerboat Reports, said about the Simrad 44 series chartplotter in March of this year when they evaluated big-screen chartplotters, ”The Simrad 44-series chartplotter is a stoutly built machine that oozes an aura of quality. With its aluminum case and polycarbonate faceplate, it tips the scales at 8 pounds.”

Simrad stuff costs more because you are getting a higher quality machine. You can argue if the additional cost justifies the increased in quality, but you can’t argue there is an overall higher quality machine. Also, Simrad software is excellent, but not initially the most user-friendly. You have a learning curve to go thru, but once thru it, operation of Simrad equipment seems intuitive.

The only Simrad equipment I am not sure about is their VHF radios. I’ve been told they are rock solid, right up there with ICOM’s but I have no experience with them so couldn’t tell you.

The reason you dont see as much SIMRAD stuff is because they dont advertise as much as Garmin, Raymarine and Furuno. From what I seen its great stuff, just wish I could get them to let me DEMO some of it... Jim with Byowner is correct, SIMRAD is top shelf..

you might have to be a member of boattest.com but Im not sure. If your considering a CX-Series, then I HIGHLY recommend you watch all of the videos. They are very educational and will certainly help you decide if you want the unit or not.

Boattest.com.............what an out of date heap! Great idea but no good to man or beast if it's outdated.

I just put the CX44E on my boat. as far as quality goes it's top notch. Lots of user friendly features. the menus can be confusing at first but once you figure them out it really pays off. It is very simple to use once you get it down. Overall everything is what I hoped for and the radar hands down is better than anything I have seen so far (dual radar / high - low speed scanner adjustment..etc). obviously your choices of transducer and radar antenna make a difference. After the Rayjunk i had.. I'm tickled pink
Edit: I also added a SIMRAD RD68 VHF another top quality unit. Again a little difficult to get used to, but a really nice unit. Yes it's nicer than my ICOM.

Outdated? I dont see how the CX-Series videos I posted a link to can be "outdated". The units just came out this year. The site itself, as far as boat tests go, thats a different story.

I second what tunabomer said. I put a cx44 and a cx44e on my boat. I had some problems at first but the customer service is fantastic. Just get on the phone while you are on the boat and they will work you through it.

Second to none

The CX series info you posted Capt. Suiddy was updated and very good.........great promotional video. I'm in the market for an autopilot so browsed the rest of the electronics and that's where it fell into a heap. Admittedly I'd not like the job of trying to keep a website like that currernt with all the products changing almost daily but as far as getting updated useful info it was pretty useless.

I agree. Other than the other night, the last time I was actually on the site was last summer, and not much has changed. They dont seem to really update the site with new boat, engine, and electronics tests.

For some reason, the video wio't play for me.

It seems to load, and then blank.

I appreciate the informed responses.

I'm going to start another thread about the 1603 autopilot.

I just bought a simrad cx44-e Navstation.
Quality is top. Functions are great. The ability to run CMAP NT & MAX is top .
It's not a cheap unit and ergononics with the 10' screen makes it a fine unit.
A must for serious fishing and offshore.
