I have a i need a mmsi # for the radio to work?...

You only need an MMSI if you plan on hooking it into your AIS system. If it is just going to be a standalone VHF, then you will be fine.

While you don't need an MMSI, I think it might be useful to have one, especially if you boat offshore. And you can get one assigned for no charge through BoatUS - you don't even have to be a BoatUS member to get one assigned. The reason why it would be useful is that, if you have to make a DSC distress call, and you have registered your boat and been assigned an MMSI number, the Coast Guard can use the description of you boat to aid in the search. Also, if you can get your GPS fix into the radio, your DSC distress call will also contain your location, which should greatly assist in the getting aid to your quickly. Just sayin' . . .
