Default Electronics Package Recommendation

Hey Guys - I'm about to pull the trigger on a used 2005 Robalo 225. Boat will be used mainly for getting my family over to the beach (Fire Island - NY), as well as some fishing (oldest is 7 and is just starting to get into it). The current boat has a Garmin GPSMap 498, and a VHF radio (antenna is broken - would need to replace).

If money was not a limitation (even though it is!) - what would you recommend for this boat. I'm a novice to boating - so I could really use some guidance.

I would want something with a GPS, Depth Finder, Fish Finder - would love weather reports. May possibly be running at night.

I've looked at various Garmins - not sure what the heck they all do - they all sort of look the same!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A good place to start is with the Garmin 740s.
It has a built in sonar / chart....and if you like you can add radar..for running at night.

thanks, Semper. I've seen the 740 a lot, and now i've seen the 741. What is the difference?

I have a 740s as part of my electronics package and for $845 that's a great value.

The 741xs is capable of single band CHIRP or traditional sonar use.
CHIRP is a higher quality sonar and if you do a good deal of fishing it may be worth the extra $.
The 741xs also has sonar recording and Wi-Fi capability.

If you are going to be just doing a bit of general recreational fishing the 740s will be just fine...and the savings can be put to good use elsewhere on your boat.

Another option that many have gone to is getting the 547xs CHIRP for sonar..and the 740s for Chart..you will have spent less $ than for just a single 741xs but now you have two stand alone systems.
