Default yet another gps/fishfinder combo thread

I am looking for a fish finder gps combo unit. I fish Long Island Sound. Deepest water I fish is 250 or so, most of the time I am in 50 to 150 feet of water. I was thinking about the Garmin Echomap 50, as the GPS unit in it sounds good, but am seeing comments that it is intended "primarily" for fresh water use. What does that mean? If that just means that it is not much use in deeper water, it won't impact what I do at all. If it means something else, I would like to know.

The competing unit I guess would be the Raymarine Dragonfly, but it is more money, though it can be had with the Navionics chips, which the Garmin does not have. Not familiar with Garmin's navigation chips: comparable or not? I am mostly thinking of both deph contours and buoys, hazards, etc.

I am reluctant to go with Lowrance as they have new units coming out in the fall . . . .

Anybody using the Echomap 50 in LI Sound or similar water?

For your area the Echo 50 would be just fine.
"Primarily for fresh"....not a deal breaker at all for your area...just that this may be not suited for deep water use.
This unit is 500 watts and has only a few transducer choices.. so for deeper fishing conditions it may not be the best choice.

A nice unit..wireless and sonar recording.
