IMHO I have the HDS-10 with the structure scan and just added the Airmar TM-258 and the point 1. It's way way way too much for me. All I really needed was the large sceen for my blind self. It has a brazillion options, The stock transducer is not really too good so I upgraded to the TM-258 which is awesome. The reset on position and heading for me sucked big time, that was fixed with the point 1 heading sensor. Now to the structure scan, I must really need some indepth training because to me I threw away 600 bones, I can't figure out how to read the thing. I'm sure with a ton of tweeking and training it would be worth it but not at this point. The new HDS systems may be better/faster.

I chose the hds5 over the hds7 because the screen on the 7 isn't much larger than the 5 but the cost is a lot higher. I see all I need on the small screen and I can review recordings on the sonar viewer at home.

The elite7hdi has a larger screen than the hds7. If you don't require the networking and don't want side scan, its the best value. The hds7 touch has a larger screen than the hds7 and structure scan is built in. No module to wire and connect, just add lss2 xducer. Its the best 7" in the HDS family for the money.

If I didn't get a $300 rebate I would have bought the touch.

Thanks for the input. I bought a lowrance combo about 7 years ago and had problems with it but it was the older model 5" screen. I don't remember the exact model. I sold the boat in 2010 and just bought another boat and I am not up to date on the new electronics. Are there any downsides to the hds5 or 7. I just need the basic functions to work. Thanks again.

I have an HDS7 (Gen1) and am happy with it. You might also check out the Simrad NSS7.

I had an HDS5 first version. I got frustrated with way too may menus and screens to go through than I preferred. I was constantly looking for (and finding) things. I am going back with a unit that is much simpler to use...Garmin 541.
