Default Furuno Vx2 Chip reader replacement

My chip reader no longer holds the chart chip in the slot and the chip pops out. I have a replacement reader that I was told I can just plug in, but not realize I have to take the cover off and do a little more work.

Has anyone taken the back cover off their unit? Anyone replace the chip reader? Sounds easy enough but just don't want to jump into something that has a high potential for failure before a trip.

I'll be honest with you, it isn't easy. The way Furuno has secured the card reader in the VX2's required separating the main chassis from the front bezel, which involves a particular ribbon cable for the keypad which MUST be FULLY inserted into the main board and keypad or you will say bye bye to the main board when it shorts out - ask me how I know...known issue among techs with that particular unit (RDP-149). I would just take it to a marine electronics shop and have them do it if you have one nearby.

Never actually did the swap. I asked an electronics service to do it for me. They said no they couldn't handle the repair as it required soldering and would send it back to furuno. It was the same place that told me it was easy and just order the $100 part. Sounds like you just need to take it out if the boat and send this to furuno or a reputable place.

I know this is an old thread but I need to replace the card reader as well. Noticed there are several repair shops in Dade and Broward counties on Furuno Web site. Wondering if all they do is ship tbe unit to Furuno or do they actually make the repairs locally.

Max Marine does the repairs on site and has a stellar reputation for out of warranty repairs.
