Default mix and match different brand radars and MFDs?

Can a Navico (either Simrad or Lowrance) broadband radar be combined with another manufacture's MFD, such as a recent Raymarine unit with NMEA 2000 compatibility?

Or, does both radar and MFD have to be from the same maker?

If able to be combined, will features be lost, such as GPS overlay? No autopilot involved, BTW.

I don't think that will work.

For starters the plugs for different manufactures aren't even the same. As for using NMEA2000, it can only transfer data (like speed, depth, ipod song title, etc) not large volumes of information that a radar/sounder would generate.
