The cheapest is probably Humminbird. They have a 5" unit for ~$800 or so.

For Lowrance the cheapest you can get in would be an HDS5 LSS bundle for about $1100 or so. For the neighborhood of $1600 you can get an HDS7 Touch with LSS built in.

You can get one of the HDS touch units and just get a LSS-2 transducer and plug it directly into the unit and not have to worry about hooking it up to a separate module like a non touch gen 2 unit. It also depends on what size screen you want, or how much space you have if you are flush mounting it. For less wires and not as many holes drilled in your boat, I would go with an HDS touch unit an LSS-2 transducer.

I'm running a HDS-7 Touch unit for StructureScan in addition to my larger main units. Very happy with the HDS Touch. Very intuitive user interface, the widescreen format of the screen combined with scalable windows is excellent for displaying a wide SideScan window and a narrower DownScan window.

The through hull lss2 transducer with fairing block is enormous. Its really for use on a 30' + boat. I was unsure about screwing that huge thing on my transom at first. It worked out well for me and I haven't fouled a line in it yet.

My lss2 reads bottom at 40 mph and shows images up to about 25 mph. The faster you go the more the image fades out.

The smaller TM is the lss1. You might have a hard time finding a new one. The longer lss2 gives a better sidescan image at 455 kHz and in deeper water than the lss1.

I would not go smaller than the HDS7 for sidescan - you want the pixel density and size to view sidescan. The HDS7 Touch would be a serious contender to look at for your applicaiton as it integrates the sidescan module and has a wide-screen format, giving more pixels to allocate to the sidescan view.

if you have a flat spot on the very bottom on the bottom of your hull near the back of the boat you can mount the transom mount transducer there. I had it done this way on my boat and it works unreal. i hold bottom on downscan at 35+ mph. it holds bottom better than my B60 thru hull. the structure scan I have not tried at high speeds, but ive left it on up to 15-20 mph and it gives a great view, at normal trolling speed it looks fantastic. you can see how I it did it here, 3rd pic down.

keep in mind it has to be mounted backwards and you must flip left/right in the settings. very simple.
