Default Can My DSC Radio Send a Position Signal to my ChartPotter?

Hi,

I have connected my GPS/Sounder to my DSC VHF radio, but was wondering if I got a DSC position from another boat, can that data be outputted to my chartplotter so that the position will show up on the map?

I have older equipment, a Garmin GPSMAP 182 GPS Chartplotter/Sounder and a Uniden UM525 VHF radio, in my 33 Pacemaker. On my 24 Albemarle, I have a Lowrance LCX111CHD GPS Chartplotter/sounder and a Uniden Oceanus DSC VHF radio. I have the chartplotters outputted to the VHF radios, but not the other way.

If the VHF radio can send another boat's position and have it mark on the chartplotter, I guess I need to do some rewiring. If not, at least I know it is not possible with the equipment I have.

I know it can be done, but different units/ manufacturers may have different wiring requirements. I have a Lowrance HDS 9 Touch that can be wired to my Standard Horizon GX2150. There was a thread on here recently discussing in detail this very same issue.

if you are talking about other boats dsc distress calls. yes it can show up on your plotter. you need to wire both the send and rx from the vhf to plotter. 4 wires on each.

I don't think there is really a way to test if it's connected and working though.

I think he's talking about having other boats with AIS receivers show up on his chart plotter when his AIS detects their presence, not just their distress signals.

Yes, it will display when NMEA connections are hooked up for input into GPS. I had it with a uniden radio and a 178c from Garmin and it worked.

He's not talking about AIS. Neither radio has AIS.

Make sure your NMEA 0183 connection includes both RX and TX. It should work.

The Uniden can output that data yes. From the Uniden525 Manual

NMEA Output
When the radio receives a DSC Call (Distress, Position Reply, Position Send), it outputs a
DSC/DSE sentence from the NMEA output port.
Note: When the radio receives a Distress call, it outputs a sentence in the following format.

$CDDSC,12,3081234000,,07,00,0354013946,0657,,,S,E* 6D
$CDDSE,1,1,A,3081234000,00,60875646*13
The plotter must be able to recognize a DSC or DSE data sentence input in order for it to work. The Garmin 182 accepts a DSC sentence. The way to wire it up is on page 98 of the owners manual. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMA...nersManual.pdf

As for the other vessel, the Uniden Oceanus VHF does not have a data output, only GPS in, so it's not possible with that one.
