Default Lowrance GO FREE WIFI-1

The Wifi-1 looks like like a neat product. It is a "wireless bridge that allows owners of HDS Gen 2 and Gen2 Touch displays to view and control data when used un conjunction with a wireless device" (like an I-Pad or smartphone).

Anybody here using one?

Yes, works as advertised. But do note that you need a tablet and a Touch unit to "control" your MFDs. With a smartphone, you can only view the MFD screen. With Gen2 keypad units, it is view only with both smartphone and tablet.

Nice, thanks Todd. I've got a 5" HDS Gen 2 on the way. Having a larger display via an Ipad would be sweet.

I have one installed on a HDS7 Gen2 and it works as advertised. Downsides?

- Once the ipad is connected via wifi to the HDS7, you can't access internet without turning off the wifi connection. Kind of a pain.

-Also as my boat is next to my house, my ipad will sometimes automatically connect to the GO FREE wifi instead of my home wifi...even if the HDS7 is off...the power to the GO FREE must be off or it keeps working.

- And as I don't have a HDS Touch, I can only mirror what is on the HDS7. No control.

So...it works as advertised.

Simrad/Lowrance has published the "internal" setup manual for the GoFree - so you can connect your Simrad/Lowrance network to another router and let that be the master. Then just disable DHCP on the GoFree - and then you can be on the internet via the GoFree and your own router. Documents are on Simrads GoFree download page.

From what I've read... Is that there is a "chance" that they will include internet access via GoFree in the future... And their current issues revolve around security of their own device...

You should connect the yellow wire from HDS power cable to the yellow wire on the GoFree WiFi module.

That way the Wifi will power only when you power the HDS up.

The GoFree can already be an internet router, the setup just isn't accessible from the MFD. If you access the GoFree management webpages you can configure the first ethernet port on the GoFree as a WAN port and attach it to a device that connects to the internet Any IP address not on the LAN side will be routed through this port. I have mine configured to connect to another router that can do wifi-as-wan to access marina wifi hotspots or to use a 4G cellular modem when wifi is unavailable, the switching is automatic. This allows my wireless devices on the boat to talk to the simrad/lowrance devices and the internet without changing access points.

You can also use any router in place of the GoFree, you just have to be careful with the IGMP and broadcast traffic flooding your wifi if not properly configured.

You can change some settings in your iPad to connect to the wireless access point for the lowrance app but then connect to the 3G/4G for the internet. Check out the below link starting around step 9. I have used this when at a rental house with no internet but I brought my own airplay speaker. I assume it would also work with the lowrance AP in a similar manner.

Default love my gofree

This was the easiest thing I have added to my arsenal. I love it. So easy to install and use.
