Default GPS updates

How often if ever do you or should you update your GPS?

What might you mean then? Update the firmware or replace the hardware?

Wander around the manufacturer's web site for updates. You are likely to find a place to ask to be notified about when they are available. Garmin likes to update their stuff often. Raymarine less so.

Each Marine Electronics Manufacturer has their own way of doing business. Be sure and tell us what make and model you are asking about.

I have a GPSMap 492 that I purchased when I bought the boat in 2006. I was thinking that perhaps channels shift and markers or buoys move and perhaps there are periodic updates that can be uploaded to the unit.

It makes sense to update the GPS software any time it is available unless it only involves something that is not applicable to our use , such as the support for language characters we would never use.

But from your 2nd post, it appears you were not referring to GPS updates after all, but rather just chartware updates by the chartware mfgrs to include info from all the interim LNtM's. .
I'd venture, for recreational use only, about once a year charting corrections would be wise .
But sadly, I'd guess in real life only a relatively very small percentage of rec boaters update chart chips more than every few /several years ....if ever.
If you only boat in relatively small very familiar local areas, update priority would presumably be reasonably less than for long range cruisers.

FWIW- Some chartware companies offer multiple or unlimited updates in a given period for a set price.

You can search for updates to GPS Map 492 preloaded charts here. I think you get one free update. http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/g.../programs.html

Thanks for the responses. TTaxi, yes I was referring to chart updates more than a GPS update. electronicsguysofla, thanks for the link, it may be what I need.
