Default Transducer on canoe

I have had the Humminbird 788 Ci HD DI for over a year and only used it a couple of times on my canoe-(inside shooting down through the canoe).I used a putty type mold on the canoe floor and shot through the hull. The putty has enough stick to keep out water and just peels up when you are done.I just don't care for that setup anymore and want to set it up in the water.
I was thinking of making a setup that I can just clamp the transducer . to the side of the canoe-just under water. When I am done fishing all I have to do is lift it out.
anything wrong with this Idea. I know the setup should be mounted firmly.

Ram makes a ball and socket with a flexable aluminum arm for just that purpose. I just installed one on my kayak. Cost it around $50. Works great and it easy to remove.
