Default Electronics Advice

Hi all, I'm a new THT forum member and this is my first post, so please be gentle. I'm awaiting delivery of a new Sea Hunt Ultra 211 and could use some advice on a GPS/fishfinder combo unit. Most of my boating is cruising/recreational although I will probably do a little fishing. I'm located in LA (lower AL) and will use the boat mostly inshore (Orange Beach area) and the the alabama/tensaw river system. I basically want to navigate and know the depth. I used to fish more and on my last boat (22' Pursuit) I had a Raymarine unit that cost about $2500. That would be overkill for me now. I would like as large of a screen that I can afford, but don't need the latest technology out there. I would like to buy a unit and have it installed for about a grand, if possible. The dealer I bought the Raymarine unit from charged $1500 minimum for installation so I got a marine mech. to do it. Can't recall the cost, but could not get depth reading above idle speed. What is the reasonable cost for install? Anyone know a good installer in my area?

I love this site and cannot believe as much as I love boating I've only recently discovered it.

I would say look at buying a used unit. I can't see you getting a lot for 1K installed. But you could get lucky and get it done. Good luck with the new boat.

Welcome to THT and congratulations on your coming boat.

You can get a Garmin 740s and install it yourself..and stay close to your budget.
And we can guide and help you thru the install..very easy.
And even a dealer install should not break the bank.

The 740s is a very popular unit..easy to use and very reliable.
