Don't know the answer, but I highly recommend you forget about the sonar feature and get yourself a stand alone fishfinder with newer technology.

I still use my 178C for navigation, but man when I first saw the Furuno 627 in action, it was similar to the day I put on glasses and could see the leaves on the trees again, didn't know what I was missing! Do yourself a favor, please!

The p66 is way better than the Garmin's OEM transducer - the 178c is not an amazing sounder to start with, but you should notice a difference. Talk to Gil (semperfifishing) about getting a p66, he'll give you the skinny.

I have a 178c on an 18ft fiberglass skiff. Primarily it's a chartplotter but I also hooked-up the sonar just so I know the water depth ........ and nothing else about the water/bottom characteristics. The 178 pretty much sucks as a sonar. Don't waste your time or money.
