Default Furuno 585 set up help

I have a new 585 and I need help setting it up. I have looked at YouTube and can find videos on overview and stuff like that, but nothing on how to set it up. 99% of the time I will be 200' or less of salt water.......most commonly in less than 100'. I'm primarily a diver, so seeing bottom contours is important to me. I'm running a P66 transducer.

Currently, it doesn't show me sharp drops offs or ledges as easily identifiable beyond watching depth changes. What I mean is that when I go over a ledge of a couple feet, there is no sharp drop down on the screen....I'm used to seeing a definite drop or rise on my screen. Also very hard to tell when I'm going over rocks, rubble, bumps, just flat line. Do I have it set on the wrong scroll rate or speed, maybe some other feature turned on or off that I'm not aware of? I know it takes time to learn all the intricacies and learn to read it to it's fullest potential.....I just want to be able to make the basic bottom contour stand out.

do you have it in bottom lock? the top of the screen will say something like 200hz B/L if that is the case. bottom lock is one of the positions of the lower rotary knob. bottom lock will do what you are saying, and bottom is shown as a flat line no matter the contour. to see ledges, try 200hz with no B/L.
after you get it showing the bottom contour, then play around with bottom zoom, set zoom level to around 20-30 feet so that only the bottom and that amount will be seen.

Go to page 4 of your manual.
.................................................. ....

This mode expands bottom and bottom fish on the left-half window. This mode is useful for determining bottom contour. When the bottom depth increases, the display automatically shifts to keep the bottom echo at the lower part of the screen.

Bottom Zoom is available in both 50 & 200 kHz....just use the function mode knob to switch between the two .
