Default Garmin GPSMAP 741xs first look

As mentioned around the forum I got the Garmin 741xs installed - and it is a really nice unit. I don't have a chirp transducer in yet - but I have gone through a few of the features here:
Garmin 741xs first look

The touch on the new 700 series - works much better than the older 700 series - and it is darn fast. You still get the spinning "dots" on some screens - but it is a pleasure to use. And so far despite temperatures in the high 30's (Celsius) (98f) it has not overheated yet - where the 720 would often overheat and lock up.

The Wi-Fi implementation is as stupid as on the new Raymarine a/c/e series - so you can't be on the internet while connected to the Garmin with your iPad. But it is a step in the right direction. I also tried pairing via Bluetooth - but then the BlueChart mobile program won't see the 741xs. But there is NO remote control feature yet like Simrad/Lowrance and Raymarine has.

So now we can just wait and see what the Ethernet connector is for (My guess is NMEA OneNet) and the 12 pin transducer socket...

How is the resolution of the unit when displayed on the ipad screen? And the control from the ipad? As good as touching the unit itself or is there a long delay?

Thanks for the info.

If you don't have the latest software update V2.7 you need to upload it to your 741 it fixes the your wireless issues. Once I did it with my 547 all worked as advertised. You're 741 should have come preloaded with V2.6

I have a 527xs, which Android apps are supporting WiFi connection to this unit?

I'll be getting one this week; looking forward to testing it out. If it shows depth for more than 10 minutes at a time, it's already better than the [brand redacted] its replacing.

There is NO remote control features for the Garmins yet. So you can not see the screen remotely on your phone or tablet. You can ONLY sync data between BlueChart Mobile and the new 700 series.

Mine came with v. 2.7 from the factory. I don't really have wireless issues :-) just think their implementation is a "inconsiderate" as the one on Raymarines new GPS's.

I would prefer if the MFD - if it has wireless - CAN connect to my @ onboard @ wifi - and not force me to switch between onboard wifi with internet access - or connect to Garmin/Raymarine MFDs. With Simrad - it is easier - I just have my router attached and the Simrad/Lowrance items lets MY router be the @ master @ of the network.

It's even possible to connect Navico WiFi-1 to Internet. A non documented setting is required for this to work.

Very disappointing. So I can't watch the fishfinder, radar, etc... on my iphone or ipad? It just synchs chart data? Don't need that. And then I can't use the internet while this going on? Very lame.

This is likely a deal breaker for me. Need to keep looking.
