Default Electrical Panel Installation

I was wondering if it is important to seal an electrical panel from water intrusion on a center console fishing boat. The panel is mounted on the console, exposed to spray and splash, and has quite a few electrical connections on the underside. If so, what methods are recommended . . . .sealant, gasket?? I use the boat in salt water. The panel is about 9" square, and has a number of switches on it. Thanks for any recommendations on this.
