Question Yamaha Multifunction Tach

I have a 1995 85hp Yamaha outboard (C85TLRT) with the Yamaha Multifunction Tachometer. I have a few problems with it.

-The first is the tach doesn't seem to be displaying correct RPMs. I have reach upwards of 9,000 rpm (according to the tach) on my two-stroke engine.

-The engine hours are displaying for the time I rigged the tach (started from 0 engine hours).

-The trim meter on the tach doesn't work. It flashes with all bars lit showing the engine is out of the water when the engine is down.

I have adjusted the toggle switches on the back of the tach according to the instructions the tach came with. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have it set to the 12 pole position?

Regarding the trim bars, check the sender. Make sure the tach is set to the three wire sender position.

I don't understand the comment about the engine hours. A new conventional M/F tach will show zero hours regardless of the actual hours on the motor.

I have it set to 3 lead, 6 pole, and two-stroke. Should it be set to a 12 pole?

Yeah its a replacement. I bought it new last year. I was just wondering if it had some way of "reading" the engine for running hours. I plugged it up and saw 0 hours. I just thought it would display the previous hours.

Only the Command Link tachometers display engine (actually ECU) hours. All others display tachometer hours.

Your tach should be set on the 12 pole setting.

Thats what I figured since that was the only thing I was unsure of. I'll try it tomorrow. Just curious...What exactly is a 12 pole referring to? the generator?

The engine uses what is called a permanent magnet generator. Magnets wizz by a number of coils and create electricity. Sometimes this is called a magneto.

The coils are under the flywheel. The magnets are part of the flywheel. Coils are also known as the stator and the flywheel/magnets as the rotor.

Poles refer to the magnets. A magnet has a north pole and a south pole. I am guessing that the flywheel/rotor for your motor has 6 magnets embedded within the flywheel.
