Default Radar

Hi Guys,

Looking at radars for 23-25' boat. Maybe something in the $2K range. This is new territory for me. I have a Garmin 541 chart plotter and don't know if any of Garmin's radars will work with that or should I just go for a whole package.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Thx,

Jake

To answer your original question, You may want to look into the Furuno 1623 or 1715. Both are stand alone radar units that will be under $2000.

With that said, I had another thought. For about $2000-2200 you could get a new Garmin 740 and Garmin's GMR 18 HD radar and sell your old GPS on e-bay for a couple of hundred dollars.
With the 740 you'd get a much better and faster touchscreen plotter with radar capabilities. If you run in plotter mode, radar overlay mode or radar mode you'll get the full 7 inch display for each. The only drawback to the 740 is if you run in split screen mode. The displays can get pretty small.

Good luck whichever way you go

P.S. Your 541 will not work with any radar units.

You're not going to get much for that budget. If you can free up ~$3,000 or so, you have several reasonable (if still very "budget oriented") choices.

This is new territory for me.
All the more reason to proceed carefully. Tell us more about your boat, and where/how you use it -- and of course, WHY you want RADAR and what you expect it to do for you.

No, the lowest-cost Garmin plotter which will support RADAR is the 740/740. But Garmin's RADARs are generally considered far from wonderful; and even within that broad context, their small dome-types are the "runts of the litter", so to speak. If you do go with a Garmin RADAR, I would not consider anything less than the GMR-24HD; but you aren't going to get that, and a 740S, for two grand.

For $2,270 you can get a Simrad NSS7 with a 3G BroadBand radar at BOE. There is even a $100 mail-in rebate.

This is the second best radar dome available, only the 4G version from Lowrance/Simrad is better.

The 6.4" screen of NSS7 is a bit on the small size for radar, but since it has 4:3 format it will do the job in my opinion as long as the data bar is switched off. Simrad NSS has the best user interface for radar of any unit, the combination of touch and the rotary controller is excellent.

Go for NSS7, the user interface is so much better than HDS, especially HDS-5&7 which don't have the softmenu buttons of their larger siblings.
