For $550, you could get Lowrance Elite 7, 83/200kHz transducer included. At a later time you could add transducer for down image scanning. But for less $500, you could go Elite 5, but not recommended because the price is too close to Elite 7, while feature too far.

Raymarine's CHIRP DragonFly is ready to hit the streets here...it will have a street price in the mid to high $600. range including transducer.
This just may be a unit to keep an eye on.
CHIRP dual channel sonar , downscan and chart/GPS in one package.

All, I am buying my first boat and will want to buy a GPS/chartplotter unit for it. The boat will be a 19ft Whaler that I will use for fishing around Portland,OR in the rivers however I may move back to coastal SC in the next year. I would want something that would be good for both bodies of water. Would the Raymarine CHIRP DragonFly unit be a good starter unit or should I get something a little simpler?

I wouldn't go "simpler" in any way. Spend the most you can and get the best unit you can for the money you have to spend. There's no sense in buying "simpler" and then after a month or two deciding you should have gone "less simple" or something like that.

I'm in the market for a CHIRP unit and I don't think for the price the Dragonfly can be beat. I think it would be an incredible unit for what you plan to do.
