Default Navionics CS very lackluster to say the least

I have a Navionics 642 P+ chart that went south on me. The reason I know it's bad is that my father-in-law has the same chart and I tried his and it works fine in my unit, which is a HDS 7 btw. I called Navionics CS and pretty much got that it was everything else but the chip and it finally turned into something had to happen to make it go bad.

It is 2.5 years old and I realized that they have to have some sort of warranty period. He insisted that I try to do an update for $100 and see if that fixed it. If it didn't I would have to purchase a new card. I asked him if it didn't work would the $100 be refundable and he said no. So I had to buy a $200 chip, have it go bad it 2 yrs, pay $100 to see if it fixes it and if it doesn't buy another $200 chip. So in 2 yrs be $500 into navionics chips, I don't think so.

Is my way of thinking unreasonable?
