Default VHF in Electronics Box or in Dash?

I'm designing my dash.

I decided to get a piece of white acrylic to cover the existing holes in the dash.

I just bought a Raymarine c80 and I'll probably pick up a second unit for two displays.

I have a new VHF and I'm not sure if it should be mounted in the dash or put up top in the electronics box.

What do you guys prefer?

I think I'd like the look of it being in the dash, but I think the mic wire would drive me crazy. All my other boats had the VHF up top.

You have a 3rd option .... You could install under our helm area and use a command mic.

Here's a short video of the SH and ICOM Command Mics I use.

The reason I like them in the E-box is

1] it's out of the way and the mic cord seems to usually get in the way on the dash.

2] It puts the speaker closer to your ear.

I've got my Icom 504 in my electronic's box... I'm gonna move it to the dash. I've had them both ways... just my choice.

Glad to hear that.

Disappointed to hear that.

It all depends on what else you might be putting in that dash panel, either now or later. If the VHF is going to "eat" space which might be better used by something else...?

The mic cord issue is also a factor; but how much of one will depend in part on the radio's specific location on the panel vis-a-vis where the mic connects to that radio. Some units give you a choice between front and rear connections for the mic, and offer an inexpensive kit to allow you to remote-mount the mic more-or-less anywhere you want.

As a rule, radios are one of the things which are most suitable for mounting overhead, as long as they're not out of easy reach. Unlike chartplotters, sounders, etc., you generally aren't trying to keep your eyes on them semi-constantly. So you don't get the neck-craning issues that you would if you mounted a plotter or what-have-you up there.

Really? The Raymarine C80 is a good multi display. I had a C120 before and liked it.

I'm leaning on putting the VHF up top.

I like having the ICOM up in the Ebox with a rear mic option and having the mic down low around the helm.

It was OK (not spectacular) in its day; but that day is almost as long gone as the Pathfinder stuff we discussed previously. The difficulties you're facing in finding a suitable RADAR unit for it (and the performance limitations inherent in any such unit you might find) is further evidence of this.

Note use of past tense.

That's probably what I would do.
