Default Standard Horizon

Looking at a Standard Horizon radio 1600 or 1700. What I'm worried most about is hearing the thing over the engine noise and wind. I do not want an external speaker and don't want to brake the bank seeing how I'm not loaded to buy a $600 radio. Looking at less than $200. 23 years ago I have a cobra with a speaker in the mic, seems like that worked well. You chould hold the mic to your year wile at cruise to hear what who ever on the radio was saying. Right now I have and old Stadard Horizon for the 1990 in the boat and can't hear crap wile at cruise. Almost need to stop to hear the radio. Also it don't have a quick button for the weather channels that I used a lot on other models i have owned.

Suggustion's

Consider the GX 2000. Has speaker mic, and can use remote RAM unit. Check it out. I like mine, over 1600/1700. I considered both.

Assuming you have a GPS/chartplotter on the boat, don't bother with the GX1700; it gets you nothing useful over the GX1600.

I do not want an external speaker
Why not? The main advantage to a good-quality external speaker is not so much the additional volume (tho' they can usually supply that in spades), but the fact that the better sound QUALITY means you don't have to turn up the volume to the threshold of pain in order to hear what is being said. Standard-Horizon makes a reasonably priced amplified model with very flexible mounting possibilities (flush or binnacle, as needed):

You don't need to spend $600; but $200 is cutting things REALLY thin. You give up quite a lot to hold the budget that low. If you can free up perhaps $300 or so, I would strongly suggest that you consider models like:

The first & third models I suggested above have optional telephone-style handsets/mics available.

The gx2000 looks like a good radio to fit my need's, Found one for $188. Don't really want to spend $150 more for the AIS reciever in the 2150 model.
