Default Radar??? Furuno 1623, 1751 or JRC MKII

Hello all. New to this great site. Already read a bunch of valuable info and have a question of my own on a radar purchase .

I also saw a couple threads on others purchasing radar units. The two units I have narrowed it down to (also in my price range) were the Furuno 1623 and the JRC MKII for my HydraSport 230WA. Two dealers I have spoke to at a local fishing show were also pushing the Furuno 1751 which was ~300 more. I felt as if they had many in stock! I did a posting on a local fishing site and it seemed that ~5 to 1 people prefered Furuno over JRC.

Next question is mounting/ wiring. Is this a straight forward task as long as you follow directions well. The dealers I spoke with were stating that it should be done by a qualified person (for $100).

Thanx

Welcome Aboard!

FWIW, I have Furuno. I had the dealer install it. I have read the install instructions after the fact. Based on that...

Mounting... If you have the tools and the time it doesn't seem to difficult and you will know exactly how the work was done. For me, I would probably guestimate a 4 hour job and then overrun it by another 4 hours (I like to putz, always need a new tool, or at least one extra trip for parts). Definatly a six pack job.

On the other hand, $100 seems very reasonable IF the guy doing the work is competent. I've heard electronics installs going for around $70/hr around here.

I have installed both Furuno oand JRC units on two boats. It was straigth forward. Needed piece of wire to fish the cables through the pipes. Had to remove the wiring form the Radome on the JRC to fish it through but the Furuno was a snap. Took all of about 2 hrs total. Hardest part was to reinstall the headliner in a 31B that I had to remove to route the wires. Needed drill with a 3/8" bit, phillips screwdriver and 4 hands to install the bolts for the radome (one on top to hold the unit the other below to screw in the retaining bolts.

efishnsea, I had no problem installing my 1623 Furuno. The radar performs very well and is what I expected. If you are somewhat mechanically inlcined and read instructions o-k, then you will have no problem! My unit didn't need to be aligned or otherwise calibrated, the targets observed ahead of me are just about perfect. Like Marlyn says, about 2 hrs and the job is done..

Good luck, I am sure you will enjoy whatever unit you purchase. Mine is on whenever I am out.

I suggest you get the 1715, the extra range is worth the $$

I am in the process of buying a radar unit too. My understanding to this point is the 1715 is the best of the bunch you listed. Furuno had screen problems with the 1622. They fixed the problems (supposedly) and added a few additional features and relabeled it the 1623. They are still having screen problems. There are many people on this board with both the 1622 and 1623 that have not said anything about screen problems. Maybe they are lucky, but the marina where I keep the boat has had many isues with people returning the screen. If you call Furuno (I did), they will tell you initially they did have problems, but they were fixed.

I like the JRC stuff. JRC is like the unwanted step-child of the consumer marine electronics market. The MK II 1500 is hard to beat for the money. Also, for the same price as the 1715 you can get the JRC 1800 which has a WAAS GPS sensor to overlay the radar over a chart. It will also function as a chartplotter. A decent one at that. IT is also color.

Food for thought.

This may be a dumb question, but i am also looking to get one of these radars right now. I was wondering what the difference between the black and white sreen JRC has and the mono LCD the furuno has. What are the advantages and disadvantage between both?

The Furuno screen is clearer and has a better backlight. It also has a larger dome with alittle more output which will get you better target definition and seperation.

the Furuno 1751 is well worth the extra money over the 1623 I bought a1623 and had proplems is close quaters ( lot of gosts & cluter) spent
time on the phone with there tech support ( there great ! ) and was told after all ajustment where tryed. a more powerful unite was the key so I took it back and got a 1712 (replace by the 1751) boy what a difference I put it up against any radar in is class and like I said there tech support is first class Paul

just installed the JRC 1500 MKII last week - no problems whatsoever and the installation is straightforward. Had to disconnect the cable going to the radome - again - no problrm. I really like the unit and for the few nights I am out on the ocean, it works perfect. Factory support is good too - they emailed me with a few questions I had even on the weekend! As I like to carry no mfr nanes on my boats I was able to easliy peel off the hideous "JRC" on the radome.

I agree with you guys about JRC. They make a great product and the customer support is the best I have seen. JRC made all of Raytheons electonics before they split up and went to Raymarine. So, that tells you what kind of products they make. I just installed the 1800 cp on my boat this weekend.

I wouldn't say too many good things about jrc
because as soon as their getting their market share in the leisure market
the good factory discounts will stop..and it will be priced the same as the others
