Default Garmin 740 vs 720

Does anyone know the difference between the Garmin 740 and 720? I've read thru the web site descriptions of both and I don't see the difference justifying the difference in cost.

The 740 comes with preloaded maps.

If you're planning on purchasing the G2 Vision card you can save a few dollars by purchasing the 720.

That's it? I guess I missed that. It does say the 720 comes with preloaded "base map" and the 740 says preloaded maps of coastal US and Explorer maps of Bahamas. Do you know if they are as detailed as the G2 charts? I do have a "large" G2 chart for my area which I could use.

The 740s charts are very useable if you don't need the additional detail and features such as auto guidance that the G2 cards offer.

The 720 built-in charts are completely unuseable without the G2 cards in my opinion.

Personally, I purchased a 720 along with a G2 Vision to use as my primary plotter and a 740S to use primarily as fish finder with secondary charting ability. They fit into the space I had to mount and made more sense to me than purchasing a single 4XXX or 5XXX unit.

I am a huge Garmin fan but inferring that a "base map" is even a map is completely misleading. I agree, the 720 (and any other Garmin GPS with "base maps") is unusable without a G2 card.

x2 on that/ g2 Vision Card is a must IMHO, unless you stay within well known waters. I like to cruise around & I love my 720S w/ the Garmin g2 Vision card. Too bad...You missed the $200.00 Garmin g2 card/GPS rebate. Received my check within 5 weeks!

OK Thanks guys. I do have access to a G2 large card for my area but on another boat I work on we have a G2 Regular card which shows more detail in the Bahamas than the Large card which shows a wider area but less detail. That's my question... If BobM is right, then I would be better off with the 720 and using my G2 card.
