Default Lowrance LCX 16 ci

A buddy of mine was cleaning out his garage and found his old Lowrance LCX 16ci unit. It has a bad antenna so I want to know if buying a new antenna is worth it. It would be used as a GPS only as I have a new Furuno FF.

Who out there has, or had, one and is it a good GPS? (and is anyone selling an antenna)

I've had the LCX-16 Ci for a long time and love the sensitve , high-pixel F/F section . The GPS chartplotter section works fine and I have the detailed chart card for it but it's truly terrible( way too slow and annoyingly menu-driven) compared the extremely user-friendly old Northstar 952XD next to it, so it has almost never been used for the GPS section. If you are only interested in the gps chartplotter I'd suggest "fagheddaboutit" . Plenty of new and used chartplotters out there you should be much happier with.

Thanks TT. Too bad because the price is right...free. I've heard the FF is pretty good, but the GPS is only so so. I'd really like to hook up an antenna and see how it runs before giving up on it.

If you aren't using your GPS antenna...

To put a bit of a more positive spin on my less-than-encouraging gps-side review, "it's better than a LORAN, especially a LORAN A !" ;?

If I can pick up an antenna for a decent price, I'll use it until I get the money for a Garmin 4208. At the very least I can use it as a back-up for a year and then sell it.

Buy a Hummingbird AS GR 16 antenna, cut off the connector and interface to LCX using NMEA 183. Cheapest way to get an older Lowrance back into business when the GPS is gone.

abbor: I still have the non-working LGC 12W Lowrance antenna and wiring. Can I simply buy the AS GR 16 and splice on the Lowrance connector? The Lowrance LGC 12W is 4 wires but I can't get a picture of the Humminbird connector.

No, you can't splice the Hummindbird to the LGC connector. You will have to cut the connector off the Hummindbird antenna and splice the wires to the pigtails coming out of the LCX power cable. The Hummindbird should be connected to NMEA 183, not to the LGC-12 connector. The LGC is not running standard NMEA 183, it's using 9600 instead of 4800 baud, and probably some proprietary sentences as well.
