Default HDS7 gen2 and SH Matrix AIS GX2100W

I have the HDS7 and I am thinking of purchasing the Standard Horizon mentioned in the title. Will I need the NMEA 2000 hook up to link the two together, or will this VHF be maximized as a stand alone unit?

Thanks

You'd want to hook it up to your HDS for GPS data to be used with AIS and DSC. But it's done over NMEA-0183 va NMEA-2000. Good think is there is nothing extra you need to buy except maybe some multi-conductor wire and crimps but it's just little more of a pain to get the colors matched up right and the settings correct. Wish the VHF mfgers would put N2K on their units.

So, would I have to purchase the NMEA-0183 kit separately?

No, there's no 'NMEA-0183 kit'. You'll have 4 tiny wires on the VHF that will need to match up and connect to 4 tiny wires on the HDS.
