Default IPhone - GPS question

On the iphone can you use the gps system without using the phone services. If we are in Bahamas and don't won't to use phone but do want to use GPS ability is it possible?

I have downloaded Navionics and it keeps asking to request map and I did but nothing happens. Thoughts

It's a stand-alone GPS, and while it benefits from both cell phone and/or a WiFi connection, neither are necessary. You may need to go into airplane mode to disable phone, but GPS should still work.

Not sure but I think Airplane mode disables the GPS too... Not sure why unless it is tied to GPS's not being on the "approved electronics" list on a plane.

I had this problem. i didn't want to get hit with huge fees from calls, texts, and data near West End, but was unable to use the Navionics app in airplane mode even with location services on (iPhone). Away from the cell phone signal the app still works great. So it does not require it.

If the GPS won't function in airplane mode, your alternative is to disable cell/data in Settings to avoid roaming fees.

Navionics works fine with no service, I use mine as a back up GPS but it will run your battery down trying to find service. I'm sure there's a way to stop the phone from looking for service I haven't looked for it I just turn my phone off.

You can purchase a external gps from bad elf. You can get it on amazon. Alot of flight pilots use them on their iPad to chart location. The gps works when the phone is in airplane mode. All you need to do is have a gps program that allows you to download maps for offline use. I use motion x, which has NOAA marintime maps. http://bad-elf.com/products/gps/
