Default What 6x9 Marine Speakers Should I Buy?

I am going to be buying 4 Marine Speakers that are the size of 6x9. The holes are already cut in the boat but if they werent I would buy the JL 770 round speakers as I have heard them and I am impressed. I dont think JL makes a marine 6x9. What should I be looking at as I want a pretty decent sound system that will be powered by an amplifier? Thanks, Matt

You could allways do a 6"x9" plate and put any round speaker you want in there.

Some people on the Forum have commented about a JL audio 8.8 coming out this month or so. I would just wait and get these and you probably won't have to make a plate. Just make the hole circular and install.

I installed four JBL 6x9s. They sound pretty good. They sound outstanding considering the price--I paid about $75/pair. I'm of the mind that high end audio is a game of diminishing returns. Twice the price doesn't buy twice the sound. You have to stop spending when you reach the "aural satisfaction point." (that's a new, highly technical term relating to the tendency to stop spending money when increased cost doesn't result in commensurate improvement in audio quality.) At least for my ears, I can't discern the difference. And most other people can't either.

Thanks for your support, Glen. I appreciate it. Long time members like you often add valuable advice when idiots like me make huge mistakes.

The OP asked about 6x9 speaker choices and experience. NO ONE, I repeat NO ONE replied to his specific request. Everyone tried to convince him to do something different. I answered his question with my experience. What's wrong with that?

BTW, it's been two years and they are still fine. One pair is in the cabin, the other is on the bridge deck, so neither pair is exposed to either weather or water.

And I can replace them several times for the cost of one set of the high end JL audio stuff.

No one said a damn thing about JL........

The reason no one replied is there is not a good one...and for you to recommend a bad speaker that you use in an a/c'd cabin and then write it in a manner that is sanctimonius and all of us that spend more are stupid.....well....it's. SANCTIMONIOUS.... SO I WILL REPEAT… BUYING A JBL SPEAKER AND MOUNTING IN A CC IN THE WEATHER, THEY WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 YEARS. THE SPEAKER CONE ROTS OUT.

I PULLED AT LEAST OFF BOATS AND REPLACED WITH INFINITY, PIONEER OR ALPINES....MAKING BIG HOLES FOR A BAD SPEAKER IS INSANITY.

Better reread the thread, both the OP and another poster mentioned JL. And the OP did not say anything about a CC. And he already has the holes, hence the request for a 6x9 recommendation.

Exactly what is sanctimonious about relaying one's experience and opinions? I thought that was the purpose of this board. I paid my $15 but don't recall a requirement to agree with you.

Thanks for all the responses. I am leaning toward the Infinity 6912M speakers. Below is the link to what they are. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks

I had been looking at the Memphis Audio Marine line to replace my Poly Planar 6x9's. I will do some looking at the 8.8JL that are supposed to be coming out before pulling the trigger.

I do not have personal experience with the Memphis Audio Marine speakers but I have had Memphis components in vehicles that have been great quality and would expect their Marine line to live up to the name.

except that the kind of "exotic" looks may not work for all applications

I am a little concerned about the chrome finish on a 24 bay boat. The price is right on the Infinity speakers though. I just ordered a Clarion 4 channel amplifier that puts out 90 RMS and the infinities are 100 RMS so thats a good match. Now I have to make up my mind on the chrome finish of the Infinities or go elsewhere.

UPDATE: Speakers and amplifier are in and they sound amazing! I am in the process of looking for a headunit now and dont know which one to get. The only feature that I really need would be the ability to hook up an Ipod to it. CD/DVD Player is a nice option to have but not necessary. Any opinions?
