Default HDS Gen 2 structurescan questions

I'm still on the fence between and HDS 7 and an E7D. I really like that the E7D can display a video camera input. But for the price of an E7D, I could actually purchase an HDS 8 with StructureScan! The biggest thing I liked about the E7D was the video, don't care for the touchscreen, remote viewing or wifi stuff. But then a larger screen and s-scan would be cool even though I don't fish that much, especially now with that $300 rebate.

Or just stick with an HDS 7, but that only has 1 card slot.

Is it possible to copy the insight HD or navionics pplus files over onto a larger memory card? If not, how are you HDS 7 Gen 2 owners dealing with maps and saved structurescan files? How much s-scan files can you save using onboard memory?

In reading the structurescan docs, I'm a "little" confused about the modes. In order to use data mode, you have to do a pass first and record it, and those passes have to be under 10mph. Do you at least still see anything when recording to help you not overlap? Or do you have to zigzag the area blindly and just use your tracks and then look for something interesting after done recording?

Edit:

Also when recording structure scan, is it smart and only records bottom structure or does it still record fish targets?

I don't think you can copy map cards onto another card, although I know at least with the Lowrance add there is some extra space - not sure how much.

Some info here on the logging process.

It is not clear if while recording you can see the current data on your screen - I would think you would have too. Once you record a log you have to convert the file to a StructureMap file to use later.

Makes me wonder if I can record a SS log on a Gen1 and then move the file over to a Gen2 and convert - this would be useful for me with a Gen1 HDS10 with 2 card slots but a Gen2 HDS7

Happy Lowrance has an update for Gen1 Click Here

Says you can now write to mapping cards

What changes are made in this update?
HDS Gen2 1.1 includes many new features including:

StructureMap Enhancement – Enhancements include the ability to clear live history and to toggle water column when operating in Live Mode.
Writing to Mapping Cards – Now Gen2 users can save waypoints, routes, trails, USR data, structure logs and sonar logs directly to any mapping card.
Improvements– Corrected rebooting when switching to multi-panel configurations

I can def tell you you can't copy the maps over to new card, they key against the HW id of the memory card when they make it. you can move the files, but they will be unusable, unless you can find a way to clone the HW id of the sd card. I know the platinum+ cards are 8 gb with about 4 gb for maps on it
hope that helps
