Default Which handheld VHF?

Must float and be waterproof. Would be nice to have GPS built-in as well. Would like to keep it under $200 if possible. Thanks.

Edit: Needs to be able to run off regular battery's also.

See if you can find a Standard Horizon HX850S. It has GPS and DSC. The current model is the HX851S but you may find some 850s around for less.

Looks like they still have them. Great handheld vhf, if not the best after the 851, and in your price range.

I know this may sound silly...but I love my old Standard Horizon 470S! Has built-in AM/FM & I use it all of the time on the beach! Great little unit & it did cost me a few bucks @ the time!

BOE has the HX851S for very close to your specified price limit.

Hodges Marine has the SH HX851S for $204.72 plus $8.95 shipping. Why even bother with the HX850S for $10.00 less.

Yes....there is an optional accessory which takes alkaline batteries. I just ordered an extra li-ion battery pack.

There is also a Simrad radio that's a new model this year that looks functionally equivalent to the HX-851, but I seriously doubt it will beat the price on a group buy of the HX-851's in the link.

It also is 5W transmit instead of 6W on the HX.

I clicked on your link...................... the price is now $269 ;?

There's a group buy going on in the trading post. I haven't seen the negotiated price yet but it should be pretty cheap.

Bluewaterseeker you are incorrect. The Hodges Marine link lists the unit for $269, but when you add it to your cart (as the ad states), the price is reduced to $204.72.

Oh, ok. I didn't go that far when I looked at it. I saw the $269 price and clicked out of it.

Thanks.
