Default hds-8 and insight mapping

I was at west marine looking at an hds-5 gen one with nautic insight. I was not impressed with the built in maps. They had no color contour of the dephts. I played with it for about 20 minutes and didn not see were to turn that function on. I have that function on my garmin 378 and see it on the garmin unit at the West Marine store. It looked hard to see the depths. Not as many soundings and without the contour lines and color's to show the depths would make it hard to drive to stay in safe water.
When I got home, I called Lowrance up about this. He did not know how old the West Marine unit was and told me to got to The Lowrance web site to check out the Insight HD 2012 for the maps that would be on the Hds-8 gen two that I would be buying. They looked pretty impressive, but not a lot on them at the site. All I know is if I get this unit and it is like the one I seen at West Marine today. I would be very disappoited and it would be a $2000 mistake.
Any input on this?

thanks
Dan

according to the guy I talk to at Lowance, None preloaded insight and insight hd 2012 are the same, but i'm not so sure about that. look at this from the lorance web site.

look under the title Zoom-in for a closer look at Insight detail. it aready states there's a difference in the zoom in. Witch this is true, what else is different?

I have insight hd, and honestly on my hds7 gen 1 i could not see a noticable difference, wound up going with the navionics plat + which IMHO is much better, gonna check it out on my hds 8 gen 2 this year see if it is any better

Depends if your lake or body of water has "high-def" surveys with the tighter contours. Have to check to see what is covered for your water.

The Navionics charts are good - the highest end has shaded contours and now that have the user-generated content available on the chart cards which is nice - you can get updates from other boaters on various info - markers, shoals, fishing spots, etc.
