Default Garmin Heading Sensor

Just ordered a GMR24HD with a Garmin heading sensor at the Boston Boat Show.

I choose the Garmin heading over their recommended KVH so I could hook it up to my NMEA 2k network.

I got my radar in a nice Garmin box but the heading sensor came in plain brown box. (Might say Airmar on it). Open it up and the sensor only says Airmar on it. Looking online the Airmar model and Garmin model number is the same only $200 or so cheaper. Looking at Garmin's site it does look like in their photo that it says Airmar on it.

My question. Does Garmin add $200 onto this product for their name and not even bother to put their name on the product or did they sell me a Airmar product as the Garmin?

Wish I came across this before ordering it but hopefully this will save others.

I don't know what the Garmin unit looks like, because I did order the Airmar. I think it is the H2813 or something like that (NMEA 2000 model). Airmar does OEM it for Garmin and it is the same unit. If you bought it from a third party vendor, they probably substituted it to make more money. I would think the Garmin unit would say Garmin on it, but they are the same, just cheaper. If you bought it direct from Garmin that is strange. In any case, can you threaten to return it and get them to refund some of your money?

When you buy the Airmar version you have to buy the cable separately. So the price difference might not be as much as you think. And they are identical. I have never paid attention to the Garmin box to know if its brown or a typical white Garmin box.
