Default Standard Horizon GX1600 DSC auto position polling?

I've searched extensively for reviews of the GX1600, including evaluations of its DSC automatic position polling function. So far, I haven't found any. Have any of you used this VHF to track your buddies on your chart plotter?

Thanks!

Andrei

Page 53 - 62 of the users manual covers the procedures in depth. All the new class d vhf's have this feature. It's not listed under track your buddy it's called Position Request. And yes it will be displayed on the radio and your MFD if connected to the radio.

Go on the Standard Horizon site and look at the the manual for the radio of interest. The GX-2150 gives you the ability you are looking for....just not familiar with the GX-1600. You would want to establish a DSC group address and then intitiate a Position Request poll. You need to have your radio integrated with your chart plotter.

I used my HX-851handheld to send a Position Report to my GX-2150 and it pops the waypoint right onto the screen.

Thanks for the input. Yes, the manual for the GX1600 clearly indicates automatic position polling up to four MMSI numbers is possible. Can anyone confirm they've continuously tracked a buddy boat on their chart plotter, using this radio and this function? Thanks! Andrei

Looks like the GX1600 is designed to automatically send and receive position requests and reports by DSC with up to four other vessels. Has anyone confirmed this function? If so, then what chart plotter? Thanks! Andrei

Vessel's receiving the position request's must have their radio set to auto acknowledge in order for this to truely work as auto tracking. The default setting for this is usually for auto ack to be off. In that case, the operator would have to manually ack the request.

Looks like you've got the process to try. I agree that the 1600 and the 2150 both allow you top set the polling interval, so it does in fact give you the tools to keep track of 'em. I also agree the recipients need to be set up to auto acknowledge, which seems like the more reasonable default until and unless it beeps and boops all the time.

I don't think it would be limited to 4 if you can create a DSC group.

I generally find that folks here don't seem to be big users of DSC functionality.

Let us know how it goes.
