Arrow ? Regarding garmin 5212

When purchasing a new garmin 5212. What will I need that does not come with unit? I will not be using radar only gps and sonar? I see that external antenna comes with unit. So will I only need to purchase transducer?

You'll also need the GSD22. Or 24 or 26.

Correct, that is considered the black box. and as you mentioned earlier, you will also need a transducer. google garmin gsd, 22, 24 and you should see a bunch of prices.

Check out the BOE Forum right here on THT. Jim has the best prices around and his customer service is top notch. I'll be ordering the same transducer and black box soon for my 4208, which I also bought from Jim.

GSD 26 is too expensive and also if you pair it with two 1KW CHIRP transducers (one for low and one for high frequncies) we are talking around 4000 EUR.
GSD 24 is cheap around 630 from semperfifishing... contact him and ask for prices for all. he is very helpful person!
GSD 22 is older and some people not very happy with it but you can ask.

For GSD 24 if you get a 6 pin transducer you will need this adapter:
http://www.blueheronmarine.com/Garmi...or-GSD-24-7786
to make it 8 pin.
if you get 8pin no problem...

No, you can get the Gsd 26 for $1500 and a 265 transducer for $1200...all under 3 grand.

But the 265 what Hz?? and what maximum depth. Id you need to do something similar to 50/200Hz... you need two transducers now (one for low and one for high frequencies) so double the price for transducers...

Both frequencies are in the one transducer. It is roughly 50/200, but since it is a CHIRP system it sweeps a range of frequencies.

Yes, the adapter is included with the gsd-24. You don't get the transducer, but everything else you need is in the box. You can also buy 8 pin transducers that don't need the converter.

As for pricing, the poster above was quoting Euros, not dollars. The euro pricing is much higher than us from what I hear.

The GSD26 is still expensive, no matter how you slice it. Whether you need or want it, and can afford it, is going to be different for everyone.
