Default Garmin GMR 24 HD "Radar Service Lost"

Update on Garmin Tech Support on Page 2.

I found a few older threads about Garmin's GMR 24 HD "Radar Service Lost" issues. I've been experiencing radar connection problems as well. About a year ago, I had an "Error Code 5" while testing the radar on the trailer. Garmin sold me an updated software to correct the "Error Code 5." That corrected the problem immediately and the radar worked without any issues.

About 6 months later, the Error Code 5 came back. I uploaded the same software (Dated Dec 2010) and it fixed the problem. Then this past November and early December 2011, the Error Code 5 came back and I cleared the problem again by downloading the same software.

The latter part of December 2011, a new message appeared, "Radar Service Lost." I downloaded the same software again and the radar is back up and running correctly. Then it happened again this past January. I called Garmin Tech Support and they advised me to check the typical items; network cable connections, ground connections, fuse holder and to reinstall software. All connections are tight, no corrosion on connector ends, cable sheath have no tears and GMR software is current version 3.4.

I read that Garmin had issued a recall (Service Bulletin #1030 Revision A; July 23, 2010) for the GMR18 HD and GMR 24 HD with certain serial numbers if the unit was installed with the GPSMAP 700 series. My GMR 24 HD radar is one of the units that is listed to be affected except I have a GPSMAP 3210.

Garmin Tech Support is sending me a replacement software program but I don't think this will cure the problem since it's the same version. They said if the new software does not work, I could send the radar to them along with $535.00 for a bench test. My radar is out of warranty.

Anybody else experience this same problem that has a GPSMAP 3210 with a GMR 24 HD Radar?

Sounds all too familiar. Unfortunately I eventually bailed on garmin radar and haven't had an error code since. Good luck.

I have had to send my 18HD radar back 3 times since I have owned it due to the same error code. The last time it was out of warranty but I complained enough that they comped it. I feel like there has to be bigger issue with the radars. I have a 5212.

The thing that stuck out to me the most was that while I would give the service dept an A for effort, it was clear to me they had absolutely no idea how to solve the issues with the radars.

Do you guys think its a software issue? I'm hoping they will comp me a replacement since my serial number is listed on the recall. My radar has less than 10 hours of use.

Was your radar listed under the recall?

Default Garmin HD18

Oh man say it aint' so, sorry to hear! I added the Garmin HD18 around 3 months ago with the Garmin 740S, less than 3 hours of use the "Radar Service Lost" appeared on my screen. I turned the unit off and was fortunate that it reset itself and began working again. Not a great feeling knowing of and seeing you with these problems, I hate having something hanging over my head on the boat that may quit at any given moment. Please keep us updated, hope it all works out for you, good luck.

Been there done that.
Sent the unit in and got the same unit back. No indication on the service log what, if anyting was done to the unit. It would get the signal lost message when ever I took a moderate slap on the hull. Could not reproduce in on the trailer. Got the unit back and reinstalled it and it tested fine but the conditions were mild that day so I'm not sure it's actualy fixed.

Now my 5212 unit will not recognize the SD card. System has been a chore to stay on top of so far.

I love the Garmin stuff when it's all working. Shipping a dome is not cheap however and I wish the repair ticket had some indication of what was found/done. In the back if my mind I keep thinking they bench tested it and sitting on solid bench it's not going to skip a beat, so it gets the shop OK and is sent back as is.

I'm curious on this as well... Have an upcoming Garmin install planned that uses this very radar.

I have a 740 with the HD18 and had issues with the radar. Garmin said the problem was compatibility with the 740 and if connected to any other Garmin there were no issue. They charged my CC for the cost of the unit and shipped me a new one that I had to pay my electronics installer to replace at my cost but I didn't complain just wanted it to work. Sent mine back and that was the end of it . When they received the old one they issued a credit. Works fine unless you get into a big head sea and have to drop the tabs and punch your way home. I get the "radar lost service" message and if I need the radar at that time I reboot the 740 and everything works fine again but on a really bad 50 mile ride home from the stream I will loose it two or three times. For me it seems to be related to how fast I am running in a big head sea.. Calm day it never falters I just live with it and wish I bought a Furuno radar. You get what you pay for.

I ran the boat yesterday in 2' chop and now a "Error Code 5" appears and still no radar service. Humm! I'll try the new software once I get it and will update the results.

I had the same exact problem with mine within a week of buying it. I called Garmin and they had me send the dome back after I confirmed that all connections were fine. They sent me a new dome and I've had no problems since.

Got word from a Garmin installer/dealer that got info directly from a Garmin rep that this was related to component issue related to the tsunami that hit Japan and affected a batch of radars about 1.5 years ago

Wow that is a new one!!! Unfortunately the issues existed before the tsunami. Maybe it was the dust bowl.

never been impressed with their fish finders either

I have a boat load of Garmin electronics, boats, cars, tractors, airplane, approaching 20 years now... I have flown with Garmin GPS from their very first product right through to todays color moving map without any issues... I have had one inline fuse with a microcrack in the element cause me grief on a GPS MAP 4212 - took a while to find because the unit would power up and then go dead intermittently...

That is not to say that I could not have a bunch of grief a week from now going from the Gulf over the Atlantic... (knock, knock) And, my world is not centered on the Garmin factory...
For those with specific issues with their radars, you guys should bond together and present a united front to Garmin telling them to fix the problems at no cost to you, fix them now, or be looking at a class action... They certainly have the engineers and the money to bring their product up to snuff... Up to now the radar sales are such a small percentage they are not motivated... Let the head honchos realize they might be front page bad news and the resources will be allocated...

Just received the new software card from Garmin yesterday. Uploaded the software and it's the same version (v3.4) prior to this update. Radar warms up as usual and goes to "Stand-By" mode. Turn on the radar and radar spins a few seconds and "Radar Service Lost" appears on the screen. So I guess step one for software update is not the problem.

I'll give Garmin Tech Support a call tomorrow for step 2.
